OOAK vs DtO

What’s the difference between OOAK and DtO Colors?

Well, first, OOAK means “One of a Kind”. These are experimental skeins that may or may not be repeatable colors. These are our color tests. While we wish we could keep every experimental skein we dye, when you’re a business that’s not necessarily the best option.

DtO stands for “Dyed to Order”. These are our stable recipes. Our repeatable colorways. And colors we can dye in whatever quantity the customer needs (within reason) as a single dye lot. That means if you want to knit a sweater, or a larger shawl (say, you need 6 skeins for a sweater or 4 for a shawl) – we can dye a single color lot for you so that you don’t need to worry about alternating skeins or matching lots!

Another big difference is that there will only ever be one skein of each OOAK color. After that, if the recipe hasn’t (or can’t) be stabalized, or we can’t get it to reliably look the same, then we may never dye more of it. DtO skeins by definition are colors we will have for years to come!

It’s rather impractical for us to keep every experiment we dye, so we sell them to you as OOAK colors! And it lets you say that you have something genuinely unique to call your own.

One Of A Kind Colors

You may have noticed that all of the colors in our launch are “OOAK” meaning one of a kind. Each color name also has the word “prototype” after it.

That’s because that’s exactly what all these colors are! They’re our tests and prototypes for potential repeatable colors. One by one, we are coming up with each of our color recipes, and are figuring out what works (and what doesn’t) as we go.

Will we get some color right first time around? Definitely. Will we also end up with some absolutely atrocious colors? Yup! That’s just how it goes.

But we want to share all of our colors, whether we think they’re good or not, with all of you.

As they say, you’re your own worst critic! And when it comes to color, everyone’s taste is so different that were confident there’s someone out there for every skein.

So join us on this journey as we discover colors, figure out our recipes, and slowly grow our repertoire of repeatable colors
